Verdugo Bar in L.A.’s Glassell Park held their monthly Mobile Mash Up on Saturday and provided patrons with five food trucks, a sunny patio, music and craft beers. I knew I was in for a good time but I didn’t know this kick-off to summer food party would take me back to the fifth grade (except now I can legally drink beer).

Collaborate and Listen

The Mobile Mash Up is a collaboration between Verdugo Bar, Eagle Rock Brewery and five food trucks. The five trucks included regulars: Frysmith, Lomo Arigato and Mandoline Grill and two wild-cards Dainty Cakes and the Buttermilk Truck. Each truck worked to develop a recipe that included beers from L.A.-based Eagle Rock Brewery. Jeremy Raub, owner of Eagle Rock Brewery, told us he was first approached by Mandoline Grill with the idea of cooking with his beer. I’d like to high-five Mandoline … over the Internet … right now. The Mandoline Grill whipped up their regular menu items and I tried the vegan crispy spring rolls served with mint leaves and lettuce.

Fluffy Beer

Dainty Cakes owner Kawai Wong introduced her chocolate stout cupcakes made with Solidarity Black Mild, Manifesto Eagle Rock Wit and Revolution XPA. They were surprisingly fluffy with creamy frosting that was just sweet enough. The stout cupcakes came with a variety of frostings and toppings, including Oreo crumbles. Kawai grew up learning how to bake with her mother and aunties and she hopes to open her own bakery and cafe. If there is ever a place with cupcakes like hers that also serves me beer, I will be a very supportive patron.

Oh Canada!

Our pals from Frysmith were cooking up a storm in the mid-day heat. “Brook actually picked up the wrong beer,” Frysmith co-owner/hubby Erik told us. Without his original ingredient in mind, Erik was forced to make multiple last minute changes to his mash-up menu. Erik concocted the Poutine fry, which made us feel Canadian. The Poutine fries were topped with ham, cheese curds and a gravy made with Solidarity Black Mild.

Until Next Time

Verdugo Bar’s Mobile Mash Up was the perfect summer kick-off, but that’s not all! The hidden bar has much more summer and daytime fun to offer including beer pong every third Saturday afternoon and patio sessions every Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 PM. You can down your beers while playing games, listening to tunes and indulging in the food truck bliss. Watch out for the next Mobile Mash Up, we hear some cooler snacks like King Kone or shaved ice may be on the menu there to make things even more chill.
