Pucker Up at Stone Sour Fest 2011 [PHOTOS]
You know you’re at a special beer festival when the left-over kegs at the end of the event were beers from Russian River Brewing Co. Over 49 different sour beers were poured at the Stone Sour Fest at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido, CA last weekend.
What’s a Sour Beer?
The sour is a style that originated from Belgian with a taste of fruitiness, acid and tart with no hop aroma. According to the BJCP guidelines sour beers are divided into these styles: Berliner Weisse, Flanders Red Ale, Flanders Brown Ale/Oud Bruin, Lambic, Gueuze, and Fruit Lambic. Some of the sours we tried like Pasadena’s Craftsman Sour Lavender 2011 smelled like potpourri. The beer pour from Belgian’s Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek was beautifully pink in color. We found Cantillon Iris, Eagle Rock Yearling, The Bruery Oude Tart and Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale to be some crowd favorites.
