Mohawk Bend Set to Open — Focused on California Craft Beer and Sustainable Good Eats
We’ve been following the progress of Echo Park’s Mohawk Bend restaurant and bar for a while now and they are finally ready to open their doors sometime next week. We had a chance to preview this former historic theater space with Owner Tony Yanow, the entire restaurant staff and a room full of press. Here is a sneak peak of the finished restaurant. UPDATE: Mohawk Bend set to open August 1 for dinner.
Hey, Good Looking!
The Romona Theatre was unoccupied for 26 years before Tony and his team started construction two years ago. We previously mentioned the space was designed by the SpaceCraft design group. The finished restaurant resembles something like a bowling alley or an old-school theater. Kristofer Keith, who heads SpaceCraft, describes Mohawk Bend as having “a touch of 70’s vibe” featuring four different dining areas: the outside patio by the entrance for casual hang out, the dining room (Floor Manager Anthony Pecos suggested it’s a good place for “people watching”), the bar area with a giant stone table and finally, the Romona Room, featuring a giant fireplace with an outside feel from the natural lighting.
California Drinking
The 70 craft beer taps curated by General Manager, Paige Reilly, will have a lineup of California beers except for the five taps they’ll reserve to feature one out-of-state brewery each month. She tells us that she wants craft beer to shine in Los Angeles, “We want to encourage craft beer in Los Angeles. We set this place up so that craft beer can shine, specially California craft beer. Our true passion is craft beer and to be environmentally responsible as possible and to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible.”
The spirits and cocktails are handpicked by Bar Manager Keith Taylor featuring a line up of all California spirits like gin, rum, whiskey, vodka, brandy and even absinthe. For wine drinkers they have you covered with five different wines also from California.
Vegan and Non-Vegan Eats
The restaurant has two separate executive chefs, Sera Pelle and Randal St. Clair. The kitchen is divided into two different parts so nothing vegan will be prepped where meat is being prepped. The food menu will have a large selection of thin crust pizza made from organic California OO flour and 100% organic Californian tomatoes and herbs. Executive Chef Sera tells us that they put their heart and soul into the food, “We thought about everything from where it’s sourced to the radius of where the food is coming from.”
You’ll find appetizers like fire roasted artichoke, eggplant rolls and Spanish stuffed dates. Seafood is on the menu too from crabs to mussels. And if you just want a burger, they have that too.
Tony Yanow opened Tony’s Darts Away in Burbank in 2010. Mohawk Bend is his second restaurant, and with all this on his plate, he’s also working on his Atwater Village based craft brewery. “I have never been much of a sleeper,” Tony tells us. We figured as much.
