Who knew someone could go on vacation and return with a whole new business idea! That’s what Justin Mi did, the 26 year-old South Pasadena native visited Maine and various lobster shacks like the famous Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, ME. Two months after his invigorating trip, the Lobsta Truck was born. The truck made its debut last week in Pasadena and it’s ready to serve the hungry people of Los Angeles.

Red Snappers Snapping, Clam Shells Clapping

Before starting the food truck, Justin worked as a seafood exporter and importer. Having already developed a business relationship in this field, he was on the right track to create the first lobster food truck in Los Angeles. “I’ve wanted to do a restaurant for a while but this is the easier way. It’s faster to set up a food truck,” said Justin. He currently employees his brother Winston Mi, and sister Catherine Mi.

Eating lobsters from a shack is nothing new in Maine but eating New England lobsters from a food truck while standing on Wilshire Blvd, that’s quite the occasion. “There is nothing like it here in Los Angeles,” Justin added.

“Both bread rolls and the lobster come from New England,” said Justin. To ensure nothing is frozen the lobsters are flown in two to three times a week. “I go to the airport to pick them up.”

The menu features Lobsta Roll, Crab Roll, Clam Chowder, and Cape Cod Chips. Justin recommends the Crab Roll with mayo and the Lobsta Roll with butter.

Let’s Make Whoopie Pie

Besides lobsters and crabs you can find Lobsta Truck serving desserts like the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich, and Whoopie Pie. “Whoopie Pie is what you find at most of the lobster shacks in Maine,” said Justin. It’s a sandwich made with two soft pieces of cookie filled with whipped cream.

Food Truckin’

When we asked Justin his thoughts about the food truck culture he said, “I think it’s great. There are so many different trucks, so everyone can try different types of food.”

So far the demand is plentiful. “The two nights we went out, there have been huge crowds,” said Justin.

Maybe it’s time for all of us to go on vacation.
