Everyone knows someone vegetarian or vegan. Even the majority of the DrinkEatTravel.com staff does not eat meat. It’s as if they are taking over the world. Quarrygirl is one of those people. Her popular website highlights vegan restaurants, dishes and drinks while occasionally exposing vegan no-no’s. We chatted with Ms. Quarrygirl about the return of her LA Vegan Beer Fest, organized by Tony’s Darts Away, Quarrygirl.com and The Roxy — what makes a beer vegan anyway?

Drink Eat Travel: Is it true you’re the Internet’s most famous Vegan?
Quarrygirl: No, I’m the Internet’s most infamous Vegan.

DET: This is the second year of the LA Vegan Beer Fest (LAVBF). Any changes from the first one?
QG: Yes! Although last year’s LA Vegan Beer Fest was awesome, we think this one is going to be even better. We’ve improved almost every aspect, adding more food, more beer and a discounted non-drinker ticket. Now designated drivers and straight edge folks can come enjoy the food trucks, bands and festivities as well. New vendors this year include Luscious Organic Desserts, an all vegan bakery, and Veg it Up, L.A.’s latest entirely vegetarian food truck.

DET: Oh yum vegan bakery! Which food items are you looking forward to?
QG: That’s a really tough question, because all the food should be insane. I guess I’m most looking forward to the beer battered avocado tacos from Seabirds Truck. They’re based out of Orange County and only come up to LA for the vegan beer fest, so their food is a real treat.

DET: What makes a beer vegan?
QG: That’s a great question! Lots of people just assume all beer is vegan, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. Some beers contain honey and/or dairy products as ingredients and many breweries use isinglass (fish bladders), gelatin, or egg whites in the filtration process. A truly vegan beer is one that doesn’t contain any animal products, or use any for filtration.

How come you guys decided to go with the ARME (Animal Rescue Media Education) charity?
QG: We wanted to support ARME because they’re a local and hands on charity, and we really believe in the work they do. From fostering and adopting out homeless animals, to organizing protests, to creating award-winning documentaries that shed a light on animal abuse … they do it all. Their most recent program, The Beagle Freedom Project is probably the most amazing of all — they’ve started rescuing dogs from research labs and placing them in loving homes. I’m talking about animals that probably had the worst life in the world, and never saw the outside of a laboratory, are now living happy lives. It’s just incredible.

DET: Is it true vegans have more fun?
QG: Of course! Vegans love to eat and drink, just like everyone else, but we have more fun knowing that we aren’t hurting our animal pals in the process. The LAVBF is a great chance for vegans and omnivores alike to hang out and enjoy an insane amount of cruelty-free food and beer.
