As the “Good Food” movement makes its way cross country and through Los Angeles, the first annual Good Food Festival & Conference made its effort to educate and ultimately, feed us locally grown, sustainable good food from September 14th thru 18th. Due to the hard work and cooperation of the Santa Monica Farmers Market, FamilyFarmed.org, and Santa Monica High School the Good Food Festival entailed good food, speakers, demos, and workshops for discussion and to inform festival go-ers.

Feeding our Knowledge and Filling our Bellies

Events at the festival included the Localicious Gala on Friday – “the event was so beautiful, so civilized, so peaceful,” says Sherry Yard of Spago, local farmers- such as Cirone Farms & Jimenez Family Farm providing insight and demos, Chefs at Play demos throughout Saturday and Sunday at the Street Fair, the Food Policy and Public Health Summit, and education at thru the Good Food For Thought Speaker Series to name a few. Upon joining the festivities at the Good Food Festival Street Fair, festival attendees were greeted with numerous booths and vendors ranging from the Mandoline Grill food truck to Beachy Cream Ice Cream to the Barnes and Noble Booth providing Good Food Movement related reads.

Chef Demos

After attending the workshops, conferences, and speakers to learn what good food is, the Good Food Festival also included a series of chef demos teaching us ways that we can implement our newly acquired knowledge all while putting the yummy in our tummies. Chef demos included Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken of the Border Grill, Sang Yoon of Fathers Office and Evan Kleiman of KCRW and Angeli Caffe, Nancy Silverton of Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza, and Sherry Yard of Spago.

Some of the presentations included Chef Sang Yoon’s demonstration the use of fresh locally grown tomatoes in his Lamb Rendang, Gauspacho, and Bloody Mary as well as Evan Kleiman’s cherry tomato pie while Chef Sherry Yard presented an Apple Streudel featuring Braeburn apples from Cirone Farms. As Sherry Yard tells us, “chefs giving their secrets, how great is that.”
