The Bruery: Ex Law Student Loves Beer Way More Than Law
Stop asking the interns where the workers are, because those aren’t interns — they are the guys running the two-year-old show that is The Bruery in Placentia, CA. No one working at The Bruery is over 30-years-old. The Bruery is the creation of a two young men pursuing their hobby while abandoning their ordinary careers.
Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number
Founder Patrick Rue brewed beer during college while studying law and eventually left his lawyer job to brew full-time. Head brewer Tyler King started brewing beer in high school when his art teacher showed him how to make root beer in class. He realized the brew kit was not only for root beer, so he expanded his craft beer knowledge long before most of us were acquiring the taste of Bud Light. Out of high school and while in college he started working at BJ’s, a chain restaurant and brewhouse, where he was just old enough to serve and learn about beer. When he told BJ’s he was leaving to pursue a start-up brewery, they didn’t want him to leave but underestimating him they said he could return if it didn’t work out. He showed them!
The Bruery celebrated their second anniversary with a big party featuring The Bruery’s Belgian style beers, chocolate covered bacon, Belgian waffles, gourmet cheeses, delicious food by Beachwood BBQ, and the Anniversary ale, Coton. They also served 100% Barrel Aged Coton, a 17% ABV ale, which tastes like a child beget by bourbon and beer. They name their anniversary ales after traditional wedding anniversary gifts, making their first anniversary ale “Papier” (paper). Each year The Bruery saves a little of their anniversary ale for the next year’s barrel. So by the time their 10th anniversary comes around we will be drinking Pottery, or Poterie, with some interns.
